The Cinque Terre — five colorful villages clinging to the cliffs of the Italian Riviera — are a dream destination for many travelers. But what if you only have one day? No problem. With the regional train zipping along the coast, you can easily explore all five villages in just one magical day.

In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to do it — step by step — with tips on where to go, what to eat, and how to make the most of every stop.

🚆 Why Travel by Train?

The Cinque Terre Express is fast, reliable, and incredibly scenic. Running between La Spezia and Levanto, the train stops in all five villages and takes only 3–5 minutes between each. It’s hands-down the easiest and most efficient way to see everything without stress.

💡 Tip: Buy the Cinque Terre Train Card, which gives you unlimited rides for the day and includes access to the national park trails.

🗺️ The Itinerary: Cinque Terre in One Day by Train

🕗 Start Early in La Spezia

Begin your adventure in La Spezia Centrale. Grab a quick espresso and cornetto at the station, then catch the train heading toward Levanto.

1. Riomaggiore | 08:30–09:30

• Your first stop is Riomaggiore, a village of stacked colorful houses and steep alleys.

• Stroll down to the picturesque harbor for iconic views.

• Optional: Walk to the upper viewpoint near the castle for sweeping panoramas.

Coffee Tip: Grab a cappuccino at Bar O’Netto or Bar e Vini a Pié de Mà, perched above the cliffs.

2. Manarola | 09:45–11:00

• Just 2 minutes by train, Manarola is one of the most photographed villages in the world.

• Walk to the famous viewpoint on the hill (near Nessun Dorma bar) for postcard-worthy shots.

• Short vineyard hike above the town if you’re up for it.

🍴 Snack Stop: Stop at La Cambusa for focaccia or Nessun Dorma for a late-morning aperitif with a view (book ahead).

3. Corniglia | 11:15–12:30

• The only village set high on a hill, Corniglia is peaceful and less crowded.

• Climb the Lardarina steps (382 of them!) or take the shuttle bus from the train station.

• Wander its quiet alleys and enjoy a slower pace.

🍷 Tip: Try a glass of local white wine from the vineyards around the village.

4. Vernazza | 12:45–15:00

• Arguably the most beautiful of the five, Vernazza offers a small harbor, pastel houses, and dramatic cliffs.

• Hike 10 minutes uphill on the trail toward Monterosso for the best photo spot in Cinque Terre.

• Swim in the harbor or just relax by the water.

🍝 Lunch Tip: Dine at Ristorante Belforte (reservations recommended) or grab seafood cones at Batti Batti Friggitoria.

🍦 Dessert: Gelato from Gelateria Vernazza is a must.

5. Monterosso al Mare | 15:15–17:30

• The largest village and only one with a real beach.

• Explore the old town, visit the Church of San Giovanni Battista, or just relax on the sand.

• End your day with an aperol spritz or local wine by the sea.

🍴 Dinner Idea: L’Ancora della Tortuga — cliffside dining with spectacular sunset views.

🧳 Wrap-Up: Return to La Spezia

Catch an evening train from Monterosso back to La Spezia — they run until late evening. Sit back, relax, and reflect on a day well spent in one of Italy’s most magical coastal regions.

🌞 Extra Tips for a Smooth Day

Wear comfortable shoes – even with the train, you’ll be walking a lot (often uphill!).

Bring a swimsuit and towel if you want to swim in Vernazza or Monterosso.

Pack light – a small backpack with water, sunscreen, and a power bank is all you need.

Watch your timing – allow at least 30 minutes in each village, more in Vernazza and Monterosso.
